A Song Dynasty Qingbai Glaze Bowl
Song dynasty, 960 - 1279
Qingbai glazed bowl with petal-lobed rim, a stack-firing ring mark to the interior bottom, decorated with very pale bluish tone covered by a network of straw-white crackled glaze, no glaze to the exterior base, Jingdezhen Ware
*Qingbai or Yingqing glaze is a Chinese term which means shadow or misty blue, literal translation is blue-white. This is the name given to a type of porcelain with transparent, glassy glaze, which has a bluish tinge caused by the reduction of small amounts of iron oxide in the glaze constituents. It was developed at Jingdezhen kilns during the Northern Song Dynasty (960 - 1127), supposedly to mimic the beauty of light celadon jade (Qingbai Yu). Hutian county of Jingdezhen in Jiangxi Province was one of the renowned kiln sites for firing Yingqing porcelain. Due to its popularity Yingqing ware was also copied at many other kilns in the provinces such as Anhui and Fujian.
